Recycled Paper Basket Weaving ( Easy Step-by-Step Tutorial )

Paper baskets can be very useful if it is made correctly. Learn how to weave a basket with paper that is strong and durable. It’s super easy, y ou can also involve the kids to teach them a little about basket weaving.

I’ve been listing craft ideas that are fun, green, and therapeutic and I can’t wait to share them with you all! I’m starting off with this woven recycled paper basket. You can use any kind of leftover paper to craft this basket. This recycled paper basket project is undoubtedly a fun family craft project to try out any weekend.

If you’re looking for a nice start to your therapeutic craft journey this recycled paper basket would be a great project! It involves recycling, weaving and you get yourself a woven basket that can be used for string so many things or simply as decor!

How to Weave a Basket out of Paper

Step 1: Preparing the Paper Strips

Firstly, we need to prepare our paper strips. This is a very important step because we need to prepare an even number of strips of the same length and width. Keep in mind that we need an even number (which will still have an even number of strips after diving into 2 groups) of paper strips (a minimum of to weave this basket pattern. We then will have to divide the strips into 2 even-numbered groups. For this tutorial, we are using a total of 8 strips; dividing them into 2 even groups of 4 strips. The strips I am using were scrap papers from A4 sheets. These are 11 inches long and 2.5 inches wide. I then did 3 even folds lengthwise to prepare the strips for weaving.

Step 2: Getting Started with the Papers

Grab any 2 paper strips and mark their middle part with a pen or pencil. Place the strips on a flat surface criss-cross wise.

Step 3: Weaving the first Strip

Take 3 paper strips and place them side by side with the vertical strip but making sure to keep the pattern over and under with the horizontal strip.

Step 4: Weaving the Base

Now grab the 3 other strips and weave them over and under horizontally to form the square bottom base. make sure to keep the weave nice and adjacent.

Step 5: Marking the Bottom Base

This is very important. Use a pen or pencil to draw another square inside the bottom base square by joining the middle points of each of its lines. The smaller square is going to be the actual bottom base of the basket. Make folds along the small square lines to create creases.

Step 6: Starting the Weaving

Let’s flip the woven piece to the other side. We will start the weaving with any 2 middle strips.

Step 7: Weaving Over and Under

Hold any 2 middle strips and weave one over the other one (the strip which is under its previous strip should be woven over). Bring it over the next strip and pull them together by 90 degrees.

Step 8: One Corner Done!

Now, weave the next strips over and under. As each side has 4 strips, you can weave the 4 strips over and under for now to form the corner of the basket.

Step 9: Secure the Woven Side

Use a clothespin to secure the woven part. One by one weave the 3 other sides over and under to form the rest of the corners of the basket.

Step 10: The Bottom Base

This is how the bottom side of the basket would look like after weaving all 4 corners of the basket.

Step 11: All 4 Sides Woven Up

Once the corners are formed, continue to weave over and under.

Step 13: Keep Weaving Over and Under

Keep weaving until the basket reaches its required height or until there is enough length of the strips left.

Step 14: Weave in the Open Ends

Make sure that at least half an inch of the shortest strip is left while weaving. the shortest strip will determine the height of the basket. carefully find out the shortest strip and tuck it inside. Now carefully and one by one tuck the rest of the strips inside by keeping the height aligned with the shortest strip.

Step 15: Secure the Top End to Complete

Apply glue on the tucked-in open ends to secure the weave.

МИНИ-УРОК №5 ТЕМА ПРЕДЛОЖЕНИЯ первый мини-урок по написанию абзацев.

1. УЧИТЬ

В абзацах должны быть тематические предложения. Это способ организации и выражения суть абзаца! (Вот почему я использую ГЛАВНАЯ УЛИЦА для визуала. Главная улица-главная идея. Понял?) Это верхняя булочка бургера!

Тематическое предложение:

Отвечает на вопросы типа почему, как или где.
Имеет поддерживающие предложения или соответствующие детали.
Может что-то доказать, объяснить или описать.

Пример-подсказка: Какое ваше любимое время года?

Пункт: Осень – мое любимое время года. Погода идеальна для активного отдыха. Я люблю ходить в походы с братом и рыбачить с папой. Я с нетерпением жду запаха костра и вкуса подгоревшего зефира. Я люблю осеннюю погоду!

Обратите внимание, что подчеркнутое предложение является тематическое предложение. Это основная мысль абзаца. Все остальное в абзаце относится к любимому сезону года. Ниже приведены подробности, чтобы ответить на вопрос «почему» это любимое время года.

2. УЧИТЕ ОТСТУПЫ

Using the RACE Strategy for Text Evidence

Since we know that students need to be able to write constructed responses, I was so happy when I was introduced to the RACE strategy. It took the scare out of teaching constructed responses for text evidence. It gave me a step-by-step template to teach my students exactly what to do.

Even though writing constructed responses are still challenging, when you teach your students the RACE strategy and give them lots of opportunities for practice, your students will master it!

So, just what is the RACE strategy? RACE is an acronym that helps students remember which steps and in which order to write a constructed response.

R = Restate the Question

The first step is to change the question into a statement. Students need to remove the question word like who, what, when, where, or why but restate the keywords in the question.

For example, if the question was “Why did Jill decide to give her mother a jewelry box?” the answer would start this way, “Jill decided to give her mother a jewelry box because…”

A = Answer the Question

After restating the question, the second step is to finish the sentence and answer the question. Students may use their own knowledge as well as inferences from the text to identify the answer.

A few tips for this…Number one, it’s important that they make sure to answer the specific question being asked. Number two, they also need to answer every part of the question. Sometimes questions have more than one part. Finally, they need to list the character’s name first, before using a pronoun like he/she/they.

C = Cite Text Evidence

This is the tricky part. First kids need to find relevant evidence to support their answer. Then they need to write it correctly using a sentence stem, like… According to the text… or The author stated… or In the second paragraph, the author mentioned… or On the third page, the text stated… or Based on the text… and so on.

I make an anchor chart with these stems and put them up when we’re first starting to work on citing evidence. Once kids get a few of these memorized, it makes this part of the RACE strategy go much more smoothly. I do make sure students know to quote the text exactly as it is written and to use quotation marks correctly too.

E = Explain What it Means

The last part of the constructed response is where kids tell how their text evidence proved their point. Again, some simple sentence starters help kids stay on track here. Those include…This shows… or This proves… or This is a good example of… or This means that… and so on.

When I teach the RACE strategy, I like to give the kids an overview of a completed constructed response example, so they can see where we’re going. Then I break it down into separate parts to teach each one before putting it all together.

By the time kids reach me in fourth or fifth grade, the majority of students at my school have had teachers who have required them to answer a question using a restatement. They aren’t doing constructed responses yet, but most of them are fairly comfortable with at least the restating part.

So, I might spend a few days teaching or reviewing the restating and answering part. I do teach the restating and the answering together since they usually form one single sentence. Then I move to cite text evidence, which takes a lot longer to teach. The explaining part goes fairly quickly after that.

Once we’ve done all of the components, it’s time to practice putting it all together. We read a short piece of text as a class. It might be a Scholastic News article, a page from Chicken Soup for the Soul, or a passage I’ve created.

Then I model (with their input) a constructed response using a RACE template (from the Text Evidence Kit). I project it on the smartboard so everyone can see.

The next day we do this again with a different passage in pairs. When they’re finished, we go over it together to compare notes when they’re finished. After that, it is time to work on it independently.

A few notes…

Make sure to start teaching the RACE strategy fairly early in the year, so there’s plenty of time to practice it. Starting right before testing is not going to be very effective.

Do start with short passages. One page is ideal in my mind. Giving students practice with shorter texts will help them gain confidence for the longer texts to come. Baby steps, right?

You’ll want to have students write constructed responses repeatedly, but NOT for every passage and NOT every day! Constructed responses are somewhat of a chore, even with an awesome strategy like RACE.
